Open-source intelligence (OSINT) fills a unique role within the fields of national security and intelligence gathering, relying on information that is publicly available to deduce what most of us won鈥檛 see. By parsing through public domain sources like newspapers, radio, television, social media, and more, OSINT experts can gain valuable geopolitical insights, and better understand the intentions, capabilities, and vulnerabilities of the nation鈥檚 adversaries.

Social media and digital technology have transformed this field, exponentially increasing the amount of available data. Meanwhile automation, decentralized data processing, and AI/machine learning (ML) capabilities are transforming what鈥檚 possible in terms of analysis scale and speed.

鈥淲e're at a really interesting cusp, not only in terms of ML and AI, but also in how we support our partners and clients in the U.S. government by providing them the information they need to make decisions about military and intelligence strategy,鈥� says OSINT expert Mariel Verdi, who supports 无忧传媒鈥檚 clients in the national security sector.

Mariel has been working at the intersection of technology and intelligence throughout her 无忧传媒 career. As threats against land and space assets intensify, she shares her story and perspectives on this evolving and increasingly essential field.

Mariel鈥檚 work with the federal government started in college. She was finishing her master鈥檚 degree when she joined the State Department鈥檚 student career experience program. 鈥淚t was a way to bring in folks who were still pursuing degrees, and start them into the system, getting their security clearances,鈥� she says.

Her interest in technology鈥攁nd appreciation for its potential鈥攚as cemented during two overseas projects.

While earning her degree, she did field research in Kenya on the power of rural technology to help students and adults increase access to information. She also worked with a non-governmental organization to support the launch of a computer lab for girls in Tanzania.

Both projects gave her an appreciation for innovation in challenging conditions and for solutions leveraging technology, like mobile connectivity, in a way that makes sense in the local environment. 鈥淭he infrastructure and the whole ecosystem are something of great interest to me,鈥� she says.

Working together to share knowledge and grow with others has been a theme throughout Mariel鈥檚 career, starting with her early days in the U.S. State Department.

鈥淲e were working with ambassadors who negotiated the first START Treaty and who were in Afghanistan prior to the Taliban takeover,鈥� she recalls. Leaders at the highest levels took the time to mentor 鈥渁nybody who鈥檇 listen,鈥� she says, and these efforts were augmented by initiatives like Executive Women at State, a group dedicated to bringing more women into the executive ranks.

But other sections of the State Department career pipeline needed strengthening as well.

鈥淲e were losing so many people at the beginning of their careers because they were deterred, didn鈥檛 know what to do, or didn鈥檛 have a network of people to help them understand the vast State Department organization,鈥� Mariel says. And so, she and a few colleagues launched a new branch of Executive Women at State focused on entry-level and early-career women employees.

Mariel joined 无忧传媒 at the same time as defense and national intelligence organizations began recognizing OSINT as a unique intelligence field, buoyed by digital transformation and the proliferation of social media. When her husband took a job in the UK, she was able to make a geographic and career move at 无忧传媒, igniting her passion for the emerging intelligence discipline through her clients鈥� critical security missions. As she took on a role helping the team navigate complex and changing security requirements, she soon realized she needed to amp up her tech knowledge.

She tapped into the firm鈥檚 many resources for professional development and tech training, starting with 无忧传媒鈥檚 , an initiative that sought to upskill non-technical employees and grow the firm鈥檚 pool of data scientists, immersing them in an intense data science bootcamp.听

鈥淭his equipped me to apply Python, data visualization, and multiple types of data sets to my work,鈥� she says.

During Mariel鈥檚 third OSINT-enabled client engagement, she applied her new data analysis and visualization skills to expand both her client鈥檚 capability and her own skills. 鈥淲e were a really cool team focused on data fusion,鈥� says Mariel. 鈥淭hat's where I got to learn geographic information systems, which is now one of my favorite topics.鈥�

Mariel also used 无忧传媒鈥檚 FlexEd benefits to help her build skills, through partially funding a certificate in telecommunications. 鈥淚've had to learn about a lot of topics that I never would have thought I would know anything about,鈥� she says. In her journey to the UK and back, she has found her colleagues to be another invaluable source of wisdom and support. 鈥淚've been able to learn and apply these awesome technical skills, thanks to the help of some really smart people.鈥�

Mariel鈥檚 work on OSINT initiatives at the ground level has been comprehensive and wide ranging. 鈥淚t covers everything from the tools and resources that are available to the ethical lines we should establish in pursuing publicly and commercially available information for intelligence purposes,鈥� she says.

Her data expertise is needed at every step: from secure data collection and analysis to storage in a data lake and delivery in an accessible format. Other team members must translate languages, train teams, map tactics to mission requirements, and more.

But, according to Mariel, soft skills are also vital for a successful OSINT career. For example, agility and flexibility are important, as official OSINT career paths are just starting to take shape in the federal and contracting communities. Other requirements are curiosity, determination, and 鈥渁 strong dose of humility,鈥� says Mariel.

鈥淵ou're going to hit a lot of dead ends in your research,鈥� Mariel explains, 鈥渟o you have to be able to look at things from different perspectives and then go back in and research it in a different way to try to find a different result,鈥� she says. 鈥淎nd the internet itself is evolving in its structure. You have to realize there are a lot of things you don鈥檛 know.鈥�
